VoiceoverAs sustainable living and contemporary design collide, there emerges a marketplace catering to the environmentally conscious!

VoiceoverWelcome to Brown Living, a revolutionary startup that is changing the way we think about our homes, our environment, and our future. Brown Living believes that a sustainable lifestyle should never compromise aesthetics or comfort. Its mission is to redefine modern living by combining eco-consciousness with exquisite design.

VoiceoverExcited to know more? Stay tuned until the end!

VoiceoverHello, and welcome to our channel! Here, we educate entrepreneurs, angel investors, and venture capitalists by exploring the lives of successful investors and entrepreneurs who have made a significant impact on the world.

VoiceoverAlright!

VoiceoverSo behind this groundbreaking startup is a team of passionate individuals united by a shared vision. Designers, engineers, and environmentalists collaborate to create a harmonious blend of functionality, style, and sustainability. Together, they are reimagining how we build and furnish our homes, one innovative idea at a time.

And, all of this is supervised by a single woman.

VoiceoverWho is that earthly soul?

VoiceoverMeet Chaitsi Ahuja, the nature lover. She decided to start working on the platform full-time, along with her husband and brother, who are the co-founders of the startup.

VoiceoverBorn and raised in Mumbai, Chaitsi grew up witnessing the impact of rapid urbanization on the environment. With increasing awareness of our planet's ecological challenges, she developed a deep desire to make a difference.

VoiceoverChaitsi Ahuja has loved Mother Nature since she was a child. She spent weekends cleaning up beaches or walking on nature trails.

She had to develop high-budget marketing campaigns as a marketing specialist for a sizable Indian retail company to promote cheap processed foods and products made for mass consumption and bad for the environment.

VoiceoverHowever, she realized that the job was not meant for her.

Voiceover"This causes our waters to accumulate more trash. My moral code did not agree with me. I noticed that I was frequently at odds with coworkers and that this wasn't the right career for me because I detested coming up with deceptive and damaging communications. That's when I made the decision to take the risk and construct something that would actually benefit the environment," explains Chaitsi.

VoiceoverDriven by her passion for sustainability and a burning desire to effect change, Chaitsi set out to redefine modern living. She believed that harmonious coexistence between humans and nature was possible and necessary. With this conviction, she embarked on a mission to create a platform that seamlessly blended style and sustainability. This gave birth to Brown Living.

VoiceoverWhat motivated her to start this cutting-edge company?

VoiceoverChaitsi Ahuja's decision to start Brown Living was influenced by several personal factors that shaped her values, passions, and aspirations. She developed a deep understanding of the environment as well as a belief in the importance of preserving the environment through sustainable solutions.

VoiceoverRecognizing that sustainable living encompasses more than using eco-friendly materials, Chaitsi embraced a holistic approach. She understood that it involved various aspects of life, including lifestyle choices, consumer behaviour, and community engagement. Guided by this broader perspective, she envisioned Brown Living as a platform that not only offered sustainable products but also provided resources, education, and inspiration to empower individuals in their sustainable journey.

VoiceoverHow did the brand come to be?

VoiceoverIt all started with the desire to redefine the concept of sustainable living!

VoiceoverThe company's initiation was driven by a strong motive to create a platform that seamlessly blends style and sustainability, making eco-conscious choices accessible and appealing to a wider audience.

VoiceoverThe motive behind initiating Brown Living was twofold. First and foremost, it aimed to address the pressing need for more sustainable practices in the design industry. Chaitsi recognized the environmental challenges posed by traditional approaches and sought to provide a solution that prioritized the planet's well-being without compromising aesthetics or comfort.

VoiceoverThe second motive was to empower individuals to make a positive impact through their choices. Brown Living sought to inspire and educate people about the benefits and possibilities of sustainable living, guiding them towards more eco-friendly decisions for their homes and lifestyles. By providing resources, guidance, and a range of thoughtfully curated products, Brown Living aimed to create a community of conscious consumers who could collectively contribute to a greener future.

VoiceoverThe initiation of Brown Living was also influenced by the belief that sustainability should be accessible to all. Chaitsi aimed to break down barriers and misconceptions surrounding sustainable living, ensuring that affordability and inclusivity were integral to the company's ethos. By offering a range of stylish and eco-friendly products at various price points, Brown Living made sustainable choices attainable for a broader demographic.

Inspiring, isn’t it?

VoiceoverSo when was the brand launched?

VoiceoverThe brand was launched in November 2019 in Mumbai. It is a marketplace and aggregator for sustainable e-commerce. The marketplace handpicks goods that are plastic-free, earth-friendly, upcycled, handmade, repurposed, thrift, and sustainable. The website has received 2.5 lakh visits to date, with 2,500 visitors every day.

VoiceoverThe process starts with vendor selection and onboarding, where the team requests that each seller send them product samples. “We manually test them, assess their shipping and product packing, confirm their credentials, and provide our approval before listing them. The other products are listed, and those that don't adhere to our framework are removed,” says Chaitsi.

VoiceoverWhat's the process like?

VoiceoverOn the Brown Living website, vendors have the ability to list their products through the backend system. They have control over managing inventory and fulfilling orders using the backend panel. Payments from customers are processed through Razorpay/Paytm, with the current setup being prepayment only (although the integration of cash on delivery is being considered).

VoiceoverBrown Living operates on a drop-ship model, where the sellers themselves handle order fulfilment through the backend panel. When an order is placed, the seller prepares the product for shipment, and it is picked up directly from them by the company's shipping partners. The delivery is then made to the customer. This streamlined process is made possible through the automated fulfilment system in the backend panel.

VoiceoverAfter deducting the company's commission and applicable taxes, the remaining amount from the sale is remitted to the seller. This payment transfer occurs on a monthly or weekly basis, depending on the agreed-upon terms. By adopting this approach, Brown Living provides a seamless platform for sellers to reach customers while ensuring a fair and transparent process.

VoiceoverFrom the consumer's perspective, Brown Living offers convenient access to a wide range of sustainable products. It serves as a marketplace not only for established brands but also for artists, craftsmen, artisans, and small businesses that specialize in creating sustainable products. By featuring these diverse offerings, Brown Living aims to support and promote the growth of sustainable practices and provide customers with choices that align with their values.

VoiceoverNot everything goes smoothly! Good things come with challenges!

VoiceoverRight from its inception, the startup had a clear set of tasks to accomplish. One of the primary challenges was to identify and collaborate with partners and sellers who genuinely embraced sustainability. Additionally, encouraging these partners to adopt plastic-free packaging posed its own set of difficulties.

VoiceoverTo tackle these challenges, the team at Brown Living devised a unique and proprietary framework known as Brown Lens. This framework serves as the foundation for

the meticulous selection and curation of products. The curation team utilizes the Brown Lens framework to identify products that resonate with conscious customers. By asking the right questions to creators and conducting holistic evaluations, the team ensures that only the most suitable products make their way to the platform.

VoiceoverThe framework itself is built upon various pillars, including lifecycle impact, circular design principles, plastic footprint calculation, understanding the product's source and materials, assessing packaging and its properties, and considering overall aesthetics. These factors play a crucial role in determining the sustainability and suitability of each product.

VoiceoverAnother significant challenge faced by the startup was to encourage consumers to opt for products that are better for the environment. Convincing customers to make conscious choices and prioritize sustainability requires thoughtful communication and engagement. Brown Living aims to educate consumers about eco-friendly choices.

VoiceoverThroughout the journey, Brown Living remains committed to its vision of promoting sustainability and conscious living. Overcoming challenges related to partner selection, packaging, and consumer mindset, the company strives to curate a collection of products that align with its core values and resonate with environmentally conscious customers.

VoiceoverWhat did they do to make their products more appealing to customers?

VoiceoverThe team identified a few profiles that are more likely to switch by using market insights gained from community chats. They communicated specifically with each cohort in mind when they targeted their campaigns:

VoiceoverThe first group of people to embrace something new might be those transitioning to a new home or welcoming a new child into their family. These people tend to look for natural, organic, and chemical-free products that are long-lasting and cost-efficient. For these individuals, it's important to maximize their hard-earned money.

VoiceoverThe second group is made up of people who consider themselves aware of the implications of climate change and global warming. These people opt for small lifestyle changes such as zero waste practices, home composting, and the switch to reusables.

VoiceoverLastly, there are those who consider conscious living stylish and think it makes a statement. These consumers have the monetary resources to purchase costly items to showcase their commitment to a green lifestyle. This type of purchase offers social currency.

VoiceoverWhat is success like for this eco-friendly startup? Let's see!

VoiceoverThe team claims to have exceeded Rs 16 lakh in topline sales since its launch in November 2019 and to have received 1,500 orders in its first nine months of operation. According to the team, there are more than 4,000 active users and a monthly return rate of 10%.

Voiceover“Our group has expanded to over 8,000 active individuals across social networks, and our website has had over two lakh unique visitors,” states Chaitsi. The group says it has increased its seller base by 100.

VoiceoverAccording to Chaitsi, they have now included an additional 200+ firms and organizations as a part of their "inner circle" (the group of companies that operate in the sustainability sector). These companies work in a variety of sectors, including agriculture, fashion, waste management, packaging, renewable energy, and raw material producers.

VoiceoverThe team wants to expand the network of these sellers in order to increase their B2B revenues and offer consulting services to businesses that want to adopt sustainable practices and create zero-waste environments.

VoiceoverThe team also emphasizes that all products are manufactured within India and cater specifically to the Indian market. These items are created by local artisans and marginalized communities. The team's objective is to support a self-sustaining economy by promoting the use of indigenous technology and craftsmanship and fostering environmentally friendly consumption practices.

VoiceoverWhat are their future milestones?

VoiceoverBrown Living is currently bootstrapped, with an average order value of Rs 1,200 and prices ranging from Rs 125 to Rs 11,000 per order. The team is compensated by sellers with fees ranging from 20 to 35 per cent. Depending on volumetric weight, shipping fees range from Rs 30 to Rs 150.

VoiceoverThe team's immediate goals include expanding the sales funnel, boosting repeat business from current clients, and creating subscriptions for frequently purchased items/refill packs. The team is looking into B2B orders for consumption and gifting, as well as the possibility of introducing a cash-on-delivery option.

VoiceoverSo that’s it, friends. Hope this story inspires you to implement things that make a positive impact on the world and the planet as a whole!

Opening (intro)

In the chaotic symphony of modern life, where the tempo never slows and the world whirls with its unending rhythms, one crucial aspect often gets drowned out—the resonance of personal hygiene. But fret not, for there shines a ray of innovation—a revolutionary startup that harmonizes well-being with daily challenges. Ladies and gentlemen, behold the iconic Pee Safe!

Pee Safe emerges as a luminary in personal hygiene and a master of health and safety. It builds cutting-edge products that cater to everyone's needs. With their ingenious range of offerings, they grant you the power to face life's diverse circumstances with confidence and poise.

Part 1 (Initial phase)

In the dance of fate, two visionaries, Vikas and Srijana, united by a fiery drive for change, embarked on an audacious journey that rewrote the rules of personal hygiene.

On a thrilling road trip, destiny played its hand. Srijana faces an urgent restroom dilemma in unfamiliar territory.

Srijana cautiously entered a dimly lit restroom, greeted by an unwelcome stench. "Ugh, not pleasant," she muttered.

Vikas, waiting outside, called, "All good?"

Voice quivering, Srijana replied, "You won't believe this. It's a hygiene nightmare."

Vikas chuckled, "Destiny's giving you a first-hand mission."

Srijana sighed, "This is worse than I thought."

As she found a stall, she continued, "Who designed this place? No cleaning schedule?"

Vikas teased, "Leave a 'Suggestions' card?"

Srijana retorted, "Oh, we will—with vivid descriptions."

Determined, she entered the stall. "No toilet paper!" she exclaimed.

Vikas suggested, "Bag an emergency roll?"

Srijana, relieved, emerged. "Thank goodness."

Vikas asked, "What's next?"

Srijana's tone turned thoughtful. "Clean restrooms should be a basic right. Let's fuel our vision."

Vikas nodded, eyes gleaming. "Start a hygiene revolution."

Srijana, resolute, said, "Let's rewrite hygiene, one restroom at a time."

Amidst that imperfect restroom, Vikas and Srijana's journey ignited—a saga fueled by passion, an unbreakable bond, and the resolve to revolutionize hygiene standards.

Part 2 (Conviction phase)

Srijana's question brought forth a sense of nostalgia, aiming to revive a significant past moment. Vikas's eyes gleamed with memories as he recalled the unique incident. That memory held immense importance—the starting point of something meaningful. It deeply affected them, stirring strong emotions.

By combining their passion with action, they pushed limits and defied expectations.

SrijanaWe can't just talk about change, Vikas. We have to be the change.

VikasYou're right, Srijana. It's time to transform our frustration into a catalyst for revolution.

Their conversations were lively as they delved into strategy and purpose.

SrijanaOur mission isn't just about products. It's about empowerment and education.

VikasWe need to challenge existing norms and elevate hygiene standards across the board.

As a result of a dynamic partnership, their convictions were transformed into a concrete plan by combining their strengths.

They shared their ideas during late-night brainstorming and early-morning strategy sessions this way.

Part 3 (Brand origination)

Pee Safe was officially launched in 2013 and adopted a multi-faceted approach. The name "Pee Safe" was chosen with a playful nod to its purpose, and the team worked on creating a vibrant yet sophisticated logo that embodied the essence of their mission.

Vikas was determined to revolutionize personal hygiene—something that's practical and innovative. A product that people actually want to use in their daily lives. As he mulled over his thoughts, a light bulb moment occurred—or rather, a "sanitizer spray" moment. And thus, Pee Safe was conceived. This was a brand dedicated to creating products that empower individuals to safeguard themselves from unhygienic conditions.

Vikas(Scribbling furiously on a notepad) "Toilet seats! Yes, that's a common source of discomfort and concern. But what if... what if we could make them safe with just a spritz?"

Armed with determination and a newfound purpose, Vikas embarked on his journey, assembling a team of like-minded individuals who shared his vision. Together, they brainstormed, designed, and experimented, all to concoct the most effective elixir of cleanliness and convenience.

Riya(enthusiastically)"Vikas, what if we created a spray that disinfects and dries quickly? Something that can fit into a pocket or a purse, ready to be whipped out whenever needed!"

Amit(nodding) "And we could make it travel-friendly, with a pleasant fragrance to mask unpleasant odors. Imagine having a mini arsenal against germs in your hand!"

The team worked tirelessly, mixing formulas, testing prototypes, and perfecting every aspect of their creation. After countless hours of trial and error, they finally reached the breakthrough moment—the birth of the Toilet Seat Sanitizer Spray. A compact bottle that transformed any toilet seat into a safe haven of hygiene.

Vikas(Holding up the first prototype with a triumphant grin) "This, my friends, is our ticket to revolutionizing personal hygiene! With this spray, we can empower people to take control of their cleanliness no matter where they are."

As the product took shape, so did the brand's identity.

Part 4 (Growth and Flourish)

In the midst of creativity and opportunity, Pee Safe set out on its path of growth. The idea, carefully tended by Vikas and Srijana, blossomed, aiming for the heights of achievement.

Vikas(with a grin) "Srijana, remember when we started this journey? Our Toilet Seat Sanitizer Spray was just the beginning."

Srijana(Nodding) "Absolutely, Vikas. That breakthrough product was our stepping stone, but we were destined for bigger things."

Their vision extended beyond restroom doors, encompassing the broader realm of personal hygiene. Armed with their success and a thirst for impact, the duo embarked on a mission to create more innovative solutions.

Riya (Marketing Lead)excitedly "Guys, our Toilet Seat Sanitizer Spray has taken the market by storm! People love it!"

Amit (Product Development)enthusiastically "And we've got some incredible ideas for new products – hand sanitizers, intimate hygiene wipes, and even a portable disinfectant spray."

The team's enthusiasm was infectious, with each member contributing their skills to turn ideas into reality. With each brand-new product launch, Pee Safe's presence in the personal hygiene arena strengthened.

Vikas(Addressing the team) "Our goal is to empower individuals to live confidently, no matter where they are. Our products should protect against unhygienic conditions."

Srijana(adding passionately) "And let's not forget the education aspect. We're not just selling products; we're spreading awareness about personal hygiene."

Their dedication resonated with customers, and Pee Safe's brand loyalty grew. They combined quality with purpose, crafting each product with meticulous care and backing it up with education.

Sneha (Marketing Lead)(excitedly sharing) "Our social media campaigns are a hit! People are engaging, sharing their hygiene stories, and becoming part of the Pee Safe community."

Vikas and Srijana's dream evolved into a movement, with people joining hands – or should we say, spraying – in the pursuit of a cleaner, healthier world. As their product line expanded, so did their impact.

Amitproudly "Our products are now available in various retail stores and online platforms. We're reaching more people than ever."

SrijanaReflecting "It's incredible to see how far we've come. From that restroom encounter to a brand that's changing lives."

With innovation as their compass, Pee Safe's journey took them to new heights. They navigated challenges, celebrated victories, and stood strong against convention.

Vikas(Looking at a vision board covered with Pee Safe products and customer testimonials) "We're not just selling hygiene products; we're selling peace of mind."

Srijana(smiling) "And it's a ripple effect. Each person we empower spreads the message further."

Their growth wasn't just about numbers; it was about transformation. Pee Safe wasn't just a brand; it was a movement, a beacon of change in the world of personal hygiene, shining brightly and guiding others toward a cleaner, safer future.

They also figured out ways to expand their business and reach more people.

SrijanaVikas, how can we reach more people and expand Pee Safe's impact?

VikasLet's partner with retail stores using informative displays. Workshops in schools and offices could also be used to raise awareness.

SrijanaTrue, but scaling production while maintaining quality is a challenge.

VikasAgreed. We'll invest in advanced machinery and solidify supplier relationships.

SrijanaSocial media could be a powerful tool to start conversations and create a movement.

VikasYes, let's craft engaging content and encourage customers to share their stories.

SrijanaWith retail partnerships, workshops, optimized production, and a strong online presence, Pee Safe's reach will grow exponentially.

They also have cleverly leveraged the Pee Safe brand name for innovative and environmentally friendly personal hygiene and toilet hygiene products. When they first introduced sexual wellness products, they chose the brand name Domina. Furr is their positive skin and hair care line, and they have razors for ladies. Raho Safe is a low-cost product line aimed at Tier III and IV consumers, with an emphasis on offline shopping.

Today, Pee Safe has come a long way! It has raised about $10.6 million from 71 investors in 8 funding rounds. At the time of this film, they were aiming for Rs 120 crore by March 2022 and Rs 250 crore in FY23, with plans to reach over 25,000 stores.

Part 5 (Struggles and Overcoming)

In the journey of evolving Pee Safe, Vikas and Srijana Bagaria encountered numerous trials that put their determination and entrepreneurial spirit to the test. One major hurdle was penetrating existing market dynamics and consumer behavior. Personal hygiene was a hushed topic, and reshaping people's mindsets required immense effort. Convincing individuals to embrace Pee Safe's inventive solutions was an uphill battle, requiring targeted marketing, education, and awareness drives.

Another formidable challenge was securing funds and financial stability. Like many startups, Pee Safe struggled with financial constraints, needing capital to grow. Navigating the intricate terrain of fundraising and investor pitches was difficult. Vikas and Srijana encountered rejections, iterated on their business model, and showcased Pee Safe's potential to secure crucial investments.

Building a resilient supply chain and quality control presented obstacles. As demand surged, upholding product quality, sourcing reliable materials, and managing production became paramount. Vikas and Srijana cultivated strong supplier relationships, implemented stringent quality checks, and streamlined production to meet growing demand while upholding the brand's excellence.

Despite these challenges, Vikas and Srijana's unwavering dedication, adaptability, and resilience fueled Pee Safe's triumph. Their ability to surmount hurdles and devise innovative solutions cemented Pee Safe as a trusted personal hygiene brand.

Part 6 (Victory)

The Victory Phase of Pee Safe is a triumphant culmination of its unwavering dedication to redefining personal hygiene and well-being. This phase marks the brand's ascent to the zenith of success, propelled by its innovative products, steadfast mission, and resonating impact.

Having adeptly harnessed the power of its brand name, Pee Safe emerges as a trailblazer in the domain of innovative and environmentally friendly personal hygiene and toilet hygiene products.

Through strategic thinking, the brand has successfully tapped into various segments of personal care, creating a comprehensive and versatile product portfolio that caters to a diverse clientele.

VikasRemember that time we set up a stall at that local fair? We were literally explaining the concept of Pee Safe to people while handing out samples. It was a mix of awkward and exhilarating.

Srijana(Laughed) And those initial reactions of hesitation turning into amazement and interest were priceless. It showed us that we were onto something big.

VikasAbsolutely.

SrijanaOur ability to find innovative solutions to each challenge made us stronger. It wasn't always easy, but we believed in our vision and knew we had something special.

Srijana raised her coffee mug in a mock toast. "To resilience, adaptability, and unwavering dedication."

Vikas clinked his mug against hers. "To turn a crazy idea into a trusted brand. And to the countless more challenges we'll overcome together."

As they sipped their coffee, the stories of their journey lingered in the air, a testament to the power of determination and innovation. Vikas and Srijana's conversation was a glimpse into the heart and soul of Pee Safe's growth – a story of triumph born from adversity.
